Every year the IRS issues a CP01A notice, which gives victims of identity theft their annual Identity Protection PIN. On January 4, 2016, the new PINs for 2015 were sent out to taxpayers to be used in their 2015 tax filings. Unfortunately, the IRS does not proofread their notices as well as they should, so the IP PIN notices for 2015 went out saying “here is your IP PIN for 2014.”

The January issued IP PIN is valid for 2015, even though it says the wrong year. So there is no need to waste your time calling the IRS or worrying that there will be some problem when you go to file your return. Just don’t forget to give your tax preparer the notice when you bring in your other documents!
